What is the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa?

The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa, introduced on 7 December 2024, replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa, retaining its subclass number for administrative continuity. It’s an employer-sponsored temporary work visa designed to fill critical skill shortages in Australia.

Eligibility Requirements

You must:
  • Be nominated by an approved employer sponsor

  • Meet the skill, experience, and ANZSCO requirements

  • Earn at or above minimum income thresholds: CSIT or Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT)

  • Satisfy English, health, and character requirements

  • Have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the past 5 years

Visa Duration & PR Pathways

  • Up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders)

  • Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams offer a straightforward pathway to Permanent Residency via Subclass 186 TRT stream (after 2 years)

  • Labour Agreement stream duration and PR pathways are subject to specific agreement terms

Employer Obligations

Employers must:
  • Hold a Standard Business Sponsor licence

  • Have a genuine need for the role and demonstrate Labour Market Testing (LMT)

  • Offer market-rate salary meeting threshold and conditions

  • Comply with any Labour Agreement conditions (if applicable)

  • Core Skills Stream: median 21 business days
